Lindsay Dilworth and Andrew Carnill are the owners of ALTWOOD, a home goods, furniture, and lifestyle store focusing on artisan-made goods. Their furniture line is handmade by Andrew, and the store also serves as a sort of showroom. Every piece they have in their space can be customized to meet a client's needs. They've also introduced a small espresso program this season and are proud to be offering La Colombe Coffee - a direct trade company that sources the highest quality beans from all over the world.

Have you always lived in Currituck or did you relocate here?

Lindsay grew up spending summers here, and we moved to the Outer Banks full-time from Brooklyn, NY in 2015. We relocated our business to Currituck County from Dare County this spring and are thrilled to be located in the Historic Corolla Village.

What was it about Currituck County that most appealed to you?

It's a lovely place to be! All of the visitors love it so much, too. It's great to meet so many people who have been returning to the area for so many years!

Why did you decide to start your own business?

We founded ALTWOOD in 2015. We knew we wanted to grow the furniture line, and having a retail space seemed like a great way to be available and visible to our customers. Now that we're well into our third season, we're thrilled with the balance of furniture and lifestyle goods that we're so proud to offer.

What's the best part about owning a business in Currituck?

It's a beautiful place and everyone is so happy here!

What's the hardest part?

The only hard thing for us is our 30 minute commute (we live in Southern Shores), but it's worth it!

What advice would you give to someone interested in starting a business in Currituck County?

Prepare for the seasonality of the year. We're hoping for a nice, prolonged season, but will be expanding our website offerings so that folks can shop online when they aren't here.

What's one thing you wish you could change about your business?

It would be nice to have a larger space, but we're grateful for what we've got at the moment!

What do you most want people (in Currituck County and beyond) to know about you and your business?

We’re lucky to host a wide variety of work, some of which is made right here on the Outer Banks, and some spanning across the country and worldwide. We love to partner with other small businesses that are striving for a smaller carbon footprint, using little to no plastic in their products and packaging, and creating goods that will stand the test of time.

We're such a small operation; it's just the two of us handling every single aspect of the business 7 days a week. By supporting our shop, you're also supporting other small business owners, artists, and creatives who are working hard to get their beautiful work out into the world. Every single item we sell is something that we personally love, and we have relationships with every maker. We feel lucky and grateful for the opportunity to curate goods that we believe will enhance your life!
