Currituck Small Business Spotlight is presented by Currituck County Economic Development. Our goal is to share the stories behind some of our most successful local small businesses.

Anthony Kugler is the president of Coastal Carolina Water and has owned the business for 11 years. Coastal Carolina Water is a one stop water shop offering the only locally bottled water in the northeastern corner of North Carolina. The business offers 5 and 3-gallon jugs, jug-less water coolers, whole house water treatment systems, reverse osmosis drinking systems for homes and more.

Have you always lived in Currituck or did you relocate here?

I relocated here 11 years ago to be near my wife's family who have lived in the Hertford area for over 200 years.

What was it about Currituck County that most appealed to you?

It’s very picturesque, near the ocean, centrally located and close to family.

When, how and why did you decide to start your own business? Do you remember the day or moment that you made the decision?

I was a certified public accountant working for the largest accounting firm in the world and subsequently for a Fortune 20 company. After serving as the chief financial officer for a number of privately held family businesses, I decided I wanted to be my own boss. It was 2005 when I started searching the internet and within 2 months I purchased my business.

What's the best part about owning and operating a business in Currituck County?

The commute for one. Then there’s the people and living in a location that millions of people pay to visit every year.

What's the hardest part about owning and operating a business in Currituck County?

The number one problem is finding good people, but that problem exists everywhere in this country.

What advice would you give to someone interested in starting a business in Currituck County?

Make sure you understand that a large portion of your sales are made in the summer. You’ll need to figure out how to staff for it and make sure that the cash flow will carry you through the off-seasons.

What's one thing you wish you could change about your business?

Nothing really, all businesses have pros and cons. My pros outweigh the cons.

What do you most want people (in Currituck County and beyond) to know about you and your business?

We’re here to serve you with the best products available and we stand behind everything we sell and install. And if there’s a hurricane, we will be delivering water to our customers as soon as the state/local emergency departments allow.
