Venetia Huffman is the owner of Read‘em & Weep in Grandy, NC.
Read‘em & Weep is a retail storefront offering used books, games, gifts and seating areas in a relaxing and cozy environment.
About 10 years ago, I made the decision that my retirement dream was to own a used bookstore. The defining moment was when I woke up in the middle of the night with a name in my head and a vision of how I wanted the interior of the store to look.
I’m the classic type-A, overachieving personality. I wanted to translate my previous business and customer service background to my own retail venture.
I’m proud to be a Currituck County resident and wanted my business to be a destination for other residents as well as visitors to the OBX area.
I relocated from Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I find that the biggest challenges are the appropriation of limited advertising dollars as well as the necessity of extensive self-promotion. Speaking about how wonderful you are is more difficult than one may think!
The biggest rewards are sharing my passion for reading and books as well as the nice compliments I receive from happy guests.
Guests visiting my store will receive exemplary personal attention as well as a very cozy place to relax and decompress from the stressors of daily living.
I would highly recommend doing your research to understand your target demographic and to know the business needs of our community. And of course, I encourage joining the Chamber of Commerce to promote and highlight what you have to offer! The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and innovative.
