Q
Quick Facts
- I live in Norfolk, VA with my wife, Vanessa Todd.
- I'm originally from Virginia Beach, VA.
- I received a wrestling scholarship to Old Dominion University (ODU) and graduated in 1995.
How long have you been working in commercial real estate?
Since the day after I graduated from ODU in 1995.
How did you first get into real estate?
I did a summer internship with a developer in New Jersey with the intent of coming back to Hampton Roads to teach and be a wrestling coach. I caught the real estate bug and stayed almost four years.
What was your first CRE transaction?
My first transaction was an office lease in Norfolk. We signed the lease at a bar on Granby Street. I was so excited I forgot to bring a pen and had to borrow one from the bartender.
What was your most memorable CRE transaction?
Any time I am able to help a client with a good cause. Being able to represent groups that enrich persons with disabilities or help the environment mean the most to me.
What's your favorite part of working in CRE?
It's never the same thing twice. Each deal is unique because each client has its own distinctive objectives. Also, the people we meet... sometimes I think there are more personalities than people.
How would you describe the commercial real estate market in northeastern NC and the Outer Banks?
Forever changing. How many commercial properties have popped up in the past 5...10 years? Double that in the next 5.
Can you share one great piece of advice for someone looking to buy/lease commercial property or land?
Understand what you are looking for today, but plan for what you need tomorrow. I know it isn't easy to see into the future, but preparing to be in the right place tomorrow will separate you from your competition.
What is your favorite thing about the Outer Banks?
How do you describe the sound of a shell to your ear? You can't. It's just peaceful. That's my favorite part of OBX.
What's your favorite way to spend your free time?
In the Outer Banks, of course! My wife and I enjoy good food, good drinks and wonderful conversations.
